Last year Djokovic took full advantage of Rafa Nadal’s absence in Paris as he lifted his third French Open title courtesy of a dominant victory over clay-court specialist Casper Ruud. However, this year, the Serbian has struggled to find his best form and could face a tough task to defend his crown.

Jannik Sinner is the form player of 2024 and will be confident of going beyond the quarter-finals for the first time in his career, while Stefanos Tsitsipas looked superb as he won the Monte Carlo Masters. Then there are the likes of Indian Wells winner Carlos Alcaraz, two-time French Open finalist Ruud and of course, the great Rafa Nadal.

When it comes to the women’s draw, Swiatek is the heavy favorite after winning the tournament three times in the last four years. The world number one’s game is perfectly suited to clay and she will hope to add to her haul of four Grand Slam titles.

However, there are plenty of challengers including Elena Rybakina who triumphed in Stuttgart after beating Swiatek in the semi-finals. Coco Gauff was a finalist in Paris two years ago and now has a Slam to her name, while Aryna Sabalenka will hope she can rediscover the form that saw her triumph earlier this year at the Australian Open.

It was a rare dry day at the French Open on Sunday and there were some impressive performances from the top seeds in the women's draw. World number one Iga Swiatek secured a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Anastasia Potapova, while Coco Gauff, Marketa Vondousova and Ons Jabuer also progressed without dropping a set.

In the men's, third seed Carlos Alcaraz produced the best performance as he swept aside 21st seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets. Grigor Dimitrov also advanced courtesy of a comfortable victory over Hubert Hurkacz, while Jannik Sinner and Stefanos Tsitsipas also reached the quarter-finals.

Today in Paris sees the completion of the round of 16 and there are some intriguing encounters. World number one Novak Djokovic plays 23rd seed Francisco Cerundolo; Alexander Zverev takes on Holger Rune; Aryna Sabalenka faces Emma Navarro; and Elena Rybakina plays Elina Svitolina.

The 37-year-old Djokovic battled past Lorenzo Musetti in the latest finish in French Open history to keep his hopes of winning a 25th grand slam title alive. The World No 1 now takes on Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo after fellow players, including Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek, criticised the scheduling of the tournament and warned Djokovic’s late-night epic was “not healthy”.

Elsewhere today, Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina marched into the quarter-finals with straight-sets wins. Rybakina first defeated Elina Svitolina in the opening match on Philippe-Chatrier before Sabelanka thrashed the American Emma Navarro. The night session is headlined by the meeting of German fourth seed Alexander Zverev and the 21-year-old star Holger Rune.

Another title is not the only thing on the line for the Serbian veteran, who is set to take on Francisco Cerundolo during Monday's fourth round. Djokovic, last year's French Open winner, has to at least reach the semifinals for a chance to keep his world No. 1 ranking, otherwise Italian star Jannik Sinner can dethrone him. Sinner already punched his ticket to the quarterfinals with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Corentin Moutet.

This tournament has historically belonged to Rafael Nadal. However, the Spanish legend saw an early exit with a first-round loss to Alexander Zverev and might have played at Roland Garros for the last time. Spain would not be left without a star, as 21-year-old Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz has been making a name for himself. He is one of the favorites to with the French Open and has already earned a spot in the quarterfinals, where he will take on Stefanos Tsitsipas.

On the women's tournament, world No. 1 Iga Swiatek almost got upset by Naomi Osaka in the second round, but she used that as a wakeup call and beat her next two opponents in straight sets. Swiatek has not lost at Roland Garros since the 2021 quarterfinals and is currently riding an 18-match win streak at the French Open. She has also won 16 consecutive clay matches with victories in Madrid and Rome.
